Speakeasy Ales & Lagers is a craft brewery that was founded in 1997 by Steve Bruce and Forest Gray in the Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco, California, USA.[1] The company brands its beers with references to 1930s prohibition-era mobsters and organized crime. Prohibition Ale (an amber ale), the first beer the company produced, and Big Daddy IPA (an India Pale Ale), are two of the brewery's most popular beers. Speakeasy beer is primarily available in California, but has been distributed to over thirteen U.S. states and internationally. Speakeasy opened a tap room at the brewery in 2013, which is located at 1195 Evans Ave in San Francisco, CA, USA.[1]

The label is a striking red and white on black backing affair, evoking movie posters from the Prohibition era. A man stands outside of a speakeasy, dame on his arm, a pair of eyes looking back at him. Very artistic, and a label worth keeping.

The majority of their beers are simple and flavorful. They do produce some experimental batches now and again, but these beers are only available at their tap room or their brewery. The company has the feeling of one where the folks involved are doing something they enjoy, and not pushing themselves to be overly successful or to push the boundaries, but simply to have fun and make a living at the same time.

At first temperance advocates were mildly placated because brewery-owned saloons were more likely to follow the letter of the law. But the tied system led to an increased proliferation of saloons. If Schlitz opened a public house on one corner, then Blatz, Pabst and Miller were likely to open competing operations on the other three corners. Besides increasing the accessibility of alcohol in many communities, prohibitionists complained that these tied-system saloons were operating as secret social and political societies that furthered the liquor cause and pro-immigrant sentiment.

Speakeasy Ales and Lagers is one of those breweries. It has been "Legit since 1997," or so says their bottle cap. I'm a sucker for good packaging, and this brand has done a great job, well, errrr, branding itself, so naturally I'm a fan. They've also nailed the 1930s, prohibition era crime theme with their use of bold and suggestive type treatments paired with three-color shapes and designs. My two personal favorite beers are the Prohibition Ale, a total Amber Ale, that looks as good as it tastes (although I'm not a beer connoisseur so I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about), and the Tallulah, an American Pale Ale that's light and fruity and perfect for warm weather drinking (aka drink it when you're in Marin or Hawaii but not in San Francisco in the summer). I've tried the Big Daddy IPA but I'm not huge on IPAs so I wouldn't put it on my top three.

Prohibition, as the name suggests, is a speakeasy-styled bar, located adjacent to Hawksworth, where Chef David Hawksworth and his team serve up contemporary Canadian cuisine. We get the last table, which is packed at 6.00 p.m. on a Sunday.

At night, beer-lovers find the tap selection at McMenamins Fulton Pub and Brewery inviting. Like most McMenamins locations, the Fulton Pub and Brewery found its home in a historic building, a former Prohibition-era speakeasy. Rumor has it that the McMenamins Hammerhead ale was perfected at this location; either way, the Fulton serves as a nice option for both groups hoping to spend a night with some swill or families looking for a restaurant that caters to all ages. Check out their happy hour from 3 to 6 pm, or 10 pm until close.

If biking, walking or driving your own car aren't what you fancy, then take advantage of Portland's cabs and the Uber car service that travel to and from the neighborhood. Call ahead if you plan to take a cab, as Portland is not a city where you can hail a cab on the street with ease.
