It is time for a game of strategy that requires planning ahead for moves to bring your opponent king to a checkmate!

If you are looking to learn chess, this game version has quite a solid set of chess archives. This means that with the hint system or by observing AI moves, you are able to learn Chess openings. You can accept hints or even request for another move to be suggested!

When playing against the computer, you are able to set its thinking depth as in the number of steps the computer considers ahead before making its move. This essentially means customizing the AI difficulty level (easy, medium or hard) in detail. If you feel that it is taking a long time, you can even fix its time per move! Feel free to make it stronger, weaker, or to match your skill level, however you want to make chess more enjoyable for you.

Here, you are given a way out by loading and continuing the game at your next preferred timing. There is even the move history and last move records if you need it for your recap!

The pieces in this game have a shiny texture which glamorizes chess. However do not worry as this is not a graphics intensive game. Any basic system specifications will be able run it. Boards and the chess pieces are customizable. You can also choose between a 2D or 3D view according to your preferences. Or rotate the board to think from the perspective of the other party.Other basic visual effects that make the game feel realistic are shadows, reflection and smooth stretch.

People have different preferences when it comes to music in general. What is your favourite music for entering the zone or to build up a competitive mood for deep thinking? Well, only you know and the good news is that in this chess game version, you are able to select a folder of mp3 to be played or to turn music off entirely.

This chess game is free to download, you can play it on any Windows PC on a local or network 2 player game or with the computer AI. Feel free to take your time to make any move because you set the rules in this game version! SparkChess is an excellent way to get better at chess - learn the proper rules (including the elusive en-passant), practice openings, test strategies, use the board editor to recreate famous positions with FEN strings, replay famous games, import/export PGN games and databases (with comments and annotations) and let the computer help you. With 5 levels of difficulty and a behavior modeled to make human mistakes, this is a very fun game to play. Our online chess game also features an opening database created by analysing 145,000 games from international tournaments. There are 4 different board styles (a 2D diagram, two fixed 3D designs and a 3D rotatable board) to suit any style - from the playful kid to the serious tournament player.

Some time ago I asked one of the arbiters at a very large international chess festival who was tasked with entering the tournament games into pgn for sending to FIDE how often he had to deal with non-English alphabet entry for the files. He said that at lower levels (not Open) there were quite a few cases but in the Open none. Nobody was penalized for incorrect notation.

I've written a Windows program to generate chess diagrams for Wikipedia articles. You can download it here or go to my website and pick Downloads and get it that way. It runs under Windows, and it automatically puts the code for a chess diagram in your clipboard, or you can copy and paste it. Select the piece on the left and then click on the square. This new version 1.01 fixes some bugs and has some enhancements.

I recently learned that the musician Sting played a game against Kasparov. game here. Have added category 'English chess players' to Sting's page however changes for it don't seem to appear here. Is there something else to do to make it appear? ChessCreator (talk) 20:47, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We have had Category:Chess images for quite a while, although it isn't heavily used. I created and partially populated a subcategory, Category:Chess player images, to use for the many images of chess players that have been added to articles recently. These are purely administrative categories to help keep an inventory of chess images (kind of like List of chess topics helps watch chess articles). The chess player images category could use a good introduction, pointing out that many of the images are non-free fair-use, and so can't be used in other articles without careful consideration of the license. Someone who better understands image licenses could help by writing that warning. Quale (talk) 17:55, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Scouting the web for chess images, I was recently drawn to these pages at Cleveland Library [5]. They contain some quality images of living players like Karpov, Spassky, Larsen, etc. as well as some deceased players. As many of you will be aware, images of 'living people' are amongst the most difficult for us to procure on WikiProject Chess, as they tend to be copyrighted and (unlike deceased players,) lack of a free alternative does not qualify as a valid 'fair use' reason. If you click on these images, some details are listed, (check out Kasparov's image for an inexplicably odd description btw) and under rights it says for educational use only and contact the library for permission ... or similar. Has anyone already tried this? Is it likely we can get a blanket permission if we ask? Or should we just go ahead and download/use them, as we are an educational use? Any views or experiences gratefully received. Brittle heaven (talk) 23:07, 18 March 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unfortunately, a working email address is required to purchase eDVDs. If you do not have a working email address, we recommend that you create a temporary email address at one of the many free email providers (hotmail.com, yahoo.com, gmail.com) and use that when you place your order. If you enter a non-working email address when making your purchase, you won't be able to download the eDVD. We are not responsible for customer orders where a non-working email address was provided during purchase.
